As a kid I spent a lot of time in Jeffrey Park in Bexley, Ohio. This past weekend, hanging in Central Park, I had this thought: It’s a different park with different friends and it's 20 years later, but I love Central Park now for the same reasons I loved Jeffrey Park as a kid: throwing a football or a frisbee, crushing chips and hummus and oreos (hold the hummus), and petting strangers’ dogs. I know I’m literally Leslie Knope right now, but it’s true: parks are pretty special places.
It’s been amazing to see DoSomething members like you protecting the parks (and beaches and trails and blacktops) we love, creating greener and better places to practice, play and, of course, pet every. single. dog. Meet some of these members below, and be sure to enjoy your local park before summer runs out.
Let’s Do This,
Pageant Queens. Earth Warriors. Cousins. Meet DoSomething member Allison (right), who’s Teen Miss Earth of Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, and her cousin, Isabella, Miss New England Earth.
The two spent a recent Sunday picking up over 100 pieces of litter from a local park along the Lackawanna River.
After seeing her cousin capture her title, Allison got involved with Miss Earth USA, a pageant organization that provides a platform for America's women to be a voice for environmental responsibility. "I wanted to be someone who can educate others on the importance of recycling, reusing and pollution,” says the 17-year-old. “The more we can educate, the better our Earth is for future generations."
Join Allison, Isabella, and the DoSomething members who have cleaned up 208,261 pieces of trash through our Huddle Up to Play It Forward, powered by NFL Huddle for 100.
This engineer-superhero uses his super science skills to build shelters, vehicles, and everyday devices for communities in need. Ingenious!
Now it’s your turn. Join Ricardo and create (or print!) a hero to (super)empower students from underrepresented groups to pursue STEM.
