Hey y’all! Welp, I’m finally settled back in after my four-week sabbatical in Kenya. The only weird thing is that I still have to take malaria pills for a couple weeks after the trip, and they make my dreams WILD -- two nights ago I was getting chased by lizards in clown makeup.
ANYWAY, thanks for all your welcome-back wishes! Enjoy this recap of my trip and this super fun and suuuper random playlist of songs I Shazamed in Nairobi. Then, read on to learn how the DoSomething community is making an impact for Black History Month.
Let’s Do This!
If Schools Won’t Teach Black History, It’s On Us Share our crowdsourced Black History Month Netflix watch list to educate friends this February and beyond.
Too often, US schools practice “erasure” by leaving out or misrepresenting the truth about Black historical figures and events. For example, in 2018, only 8% of high school seniors could correctly identify slavery as the main cause of the Civil War.
“Throughout my educational career, I wondered why educators were not required to teach students more about historical Black figures,” said DoSomething member Ariel. “Now that I'm entering college, professors are finally addressing the fact that countless Black activists are left out of history course material.”
Many schools aren’t teaching the real deal on Black history, but we can. This February, share our crowdsourced Netflix watch list. By inspiring friends to watch things like When They See Us, 13th, and Teach Us All, we can fight erasure and get educated during Black History Month and beyond. (Bonus points: Host a watch party of one of your favorite films from the list.)
