Hey y’all! I’m baaaack from my sabbatical in Nairobi, Kenya. First of all, *huge* shoutout and thanks to our rockstar writer Jackie for crushing WYD (and ya know, the rest of my job) while I was out. I have big shoes (or, in her case, Crocs) to fill. (If you want more Jackie, subscribe to The Boost, which she writes every Thurs!)
As soon as I get over this aggressive jet lag (I fell asleep at 8:00 on Sunday...hear the Super Bowl halftime show was incredible!), I’ll fill you in on my adventures. Long story short: I was working with an incredible org called PAWA254...and rode a motorcycle to work every day.
In the meantime, read Jackie’s last WYD (for a while at least) and see how you help great guys be great to themselves.
Let’s Do This!
All About (Men)tal Health: DoSomething Members Are Checking In With the Guys in Their Lives “As a man, I know it can be hard sometimes to open up about your feelings,” says DoSomething member William, 17. “I really want to establish a better connection between men that allows us to talk out our problems.”
Research shows that men are less likely than women to have conversations about their mental health. That’s why it’s so important to remind the guys our lives to check in on their mental health.
Through our Mental Note: Take Time for Yourself campaign, powered by Harry’s, DoSomething members are sharing mental (health) notes with their friends, brothers, fathers, and boyfriends to help connect them with crucial mental health resources.
“I've given cards to four of my friends and my family members, but I gave myself one first,” says DoSomething member Sami, 16. “All this high school and college stress can get my mental health down so much that I forget to ask for any help.” Know a guy who’s great but isn’t always great at checking in on his mental health? Join the thousands of DoSomething members who’ve signed up to share mental health reminders with their friends and family.
More Amazing Impact From the DoSomething Community!
Last week, we asked you to brag about amazing stuff you’re doing, and you did not disappoint. Here are some of our favorite answers from the DoSomething community. (And submit yours here!)
"The work that I am doing is centered around being able to care for animal well-being without having to give up meat. As a part of my Korean culture, meat is a huge part of my meals, but I care for animals. Therefore, I founded Ethical Carnivores to find the most ethical steps people can take in protecting animals who feel restricted and helpless!"
- Alexi, 16, New Jersey
“I conducted a survey in my community among the senior high students and realized most of them are weak in Physics and Mathematics. So with my knowledge in these subjects, I organized a free home tuition to help them understand the concepts better and improve on their grades.”
- Emmanuel, 19, Ghana
“At a sleepover, my friends and I went around our neighborhood collecting items for a local women's homeless shelter. There were so many people who were willing to donate, and it was so much fun spreading love and generosity around my community.”
