On February 23, Ahmaud Arbery, a Black man, was jogging near his home when he was followed and shot to death by two white men. The pair, Gregory and Travis McMichaels, argue that they acted under Georgia’s citizen arrest laws, ultimately behaving as judge, jury, and executioners in the fatal shooting of Ahmaud, who was unarmed.
The case passed through the hands of three different prosecutors before the men were, last week, arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault. The arrests were largely driven by the public outcry following the release of a viral video of the shooting. DoSomething members joined the nationwide call for justice through #IRunWithMaud, where thousands ran 2.23 miles (the date of Ahmaud’s death) last Friday, which would have been his 26th birthday.
Now, sign a petition to call for the resignation of the prosecutors who mishandled the case and share this guide to help friends cope with discrimination and violence in the news.
Let’s Do This,
These (Grand)Mother’s Day Stories Will Give You All the Feels DoSomething members have swapped 14,678 stories with seniors to fight isolation during COVID-19. Here are three of our faves. DoSomething member Camille, 17 DoSomething member Demitra, 18 DoSomething member Imani, 18 Camille’s grandmother recounted her time as a twentysomething politician in the Philippines “in a time where it was dangerous to even get her message out, to so bravely stick to her campaign to better her community.” Her grandma’s lesson: Go out into the world, and never apologize for who you are.
Demitra’s Yiayia (grandmother) told the story of her three-week-long journey by herself, to emigrate to America as a teenager. She learned English, enrolled in school and, 22 years later, returned to Greece to reunite with her parents and siblings. “I told my Yiayia how her story inspired me to be strong,” Demitra says.
Imani’s grandmother, an immigrant from Jamaica, made clothes for herself and for Imani’s father...and eventually sewed her way into a fashion internship and a career in the industry. “She worked hard and still was able to do what she wanted to in life,” Imani says. Now Imani is following her example to pursue her own dreams.
DoSomething member Yanni joined our community in sending words of encouragement to the real MVPs, aka our essential workers. “My closest family members are all essential workers and they have to go on work with the virus lurking,” he says. “I have so much respect and admiration for them.”
