Civil rights icon John Lewis spent most of his life “getting into good trouble.” He was one of the original 13 Freedom Riders, the founder of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and the last surviving speaker from the March on Washington. Lewis passed away last week, but his legacy remains.
In 1965, at 25 years old, John Lewis led a march across Selma’s Edmund Pettus Bridge in protest of the era’s Jim Crow laws. In what later came to be known as Bloody Sunday, Lewis and his fellow protestors were brutally beaten and arrested by law enforcement. The ensuing outrage and demonstrations eventually led to the federally protected Selma to Montgomery march and the passage of 1965 Voting Rights Act just five months after Bloody Sunday.
When the global Black Lives Matter protests erupted after the death of George Floyd, John Lewis had a message for young people:
“We were arrested. We were jailed. We were beaten. But we didn’t hate, and we helped change America. I truly believe what’s taken place now...is going to take us much farther down that road...Take to the streets, stand up, speak out, [and] do what I call: getting in good trouble.”
