This week, the country is mourning the loss of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg -- civil rights advocate, feminist icon, and the second woman to ever sit on the Supreme Court.
Throughout the 27 years she served, RBG helped drive the court to decisions that were monumental to the protection of civil liberties and equal opportunity under the law. She fought for gender discrimination to be recognized under the 14th Amendment, for same-sex couples to secure marriage equality, and for the right to access reproductive health care without “undue burden.”
When she wasn’t leading the majority opinion, RBG often handed down scathing dissents, never hesitating to let the court know where they went wrong. She did so in a landmark decision that gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which protected against race-based voter discrimination. As she sat in the minority among her fellow justices, she said the following:
“The arc of the moral universe is long…but it bends toward justice if there is a steadfast commitment to see the task through to completion.”
We can honor RBG’s legacy of advocacy and dissent by taking up her fight for equality and continuing in the bend towards justice. Today is National Voter Registration Day, so let’s start by registering to vote, and making sure our voices are heard.
